Hi all,

Today we had a busy short day. We did some reading by ourselves and did a quick partner read. We had our pillars of care assembly before heading to the gym for some tag games and races. We read the story of the Grinch and talked about how people can change for the better sometimes. We did a final desk clean of the year so when we come back in January they will be all ready for us. 

Here are our pillars of care winners for December! Congratulations to those winners and good luck for January to the rest of you. 

Care for Others: Paige - Paige is a very caring person and looks out for others in our class. She will check on someone if they're hurt and will play with people if they need a friend. 

Care for Learning: Yusuf - tries his hardest with writing. He looks at the board for help and tries his own ideas. When he is really stuck he will ask for help but he will always try himself first. 

Care for Place: Alma - Alma’s spot is always clean and tidy and she helps out picking things off the floor even if it is not hers. 

Care for Self: Cooper - Cooper listens to all the reminders in class and tries his best to listen to all the lessons so he always knows exactly what to do. 

Pillar of the Month: Skylar - Skylar is always checking in with me to make sure she is on track and doing the right thing both with lessons and with classroom expectations. She is always doing the right thing but still checks in, the picture of humility.

Thursday Dec 16th

 Hi all,

Today we had another round of carolling to start off our day. We had another great show and tell from April. We saw Mr. Wiens for music and made our Venn diagram between the movie and book of Fantastic Mr. Fox. We had ipads to do some mathletics for math before we did some self reflection on our art work so far this year. We also got to run around playing some floor hockey in gym before cleaning up the last of the folders.

Tomorrow is wear ugly festive clothing day and the last day before winter break. We will see you back at school Tuesday Jan 4th

Wednesday Dec 15th

 Hi all,

Today we practiced making Venn diagrams for tomorrow. We compared our pjs to a friends and looked for similarities and differences. We had a math quiz on doubles facts, odd/even, and place value, and did a number of the day. Today was 28. We also watched the movie Fantastic Mr. Fox so that we can compare it to the book and tomorrow we will make another Venn diagram to show how they were the same and how they were different. We had floor hockey in gym and ended our day singing winter carols with Mr. Wiens. Today we sang our song to the whole school over the internet! It was Deck the Halls. It was beautiful. 

There is no library exchange tomorrow. This will resume in the new year.

Tuesday Dec 14th

 Hi all,

Today we started off thinking about what we are most looking forward. to over the winter break! We did some journalling about it to practice our writing. We had an indoor recess today as it was colder than -20! We practiced our deep questions again with the book "Little Snowflakes Big Adventure". 

After lunch we did some mindfulness and then reviewed 3 concepts in math; odd/even, representing numbers in different ways, and doubles facts. We will have a little quiz on those concepts tomorrow. 

We had a second indoor recess as it somehow got even colder!! Then we read the book "Snowmen at Night" and made some cute snowmen pictures using chalk and pastels. 

We played some floor hockey in gym and then came back and put some more papers away in folders.

Monday December 13th

 Hi all,

Today we played a few adjective games to help us practice. We described a secret object using only adjectives and we had to guess what each other was describing, we played guess who, where you have to eliminate people based on adjective guesses, and we played 20 questions.

We had music with Mr. Wiens who showed us our winter concert video! It will be released on YouTube later on in the week. 

We practiced our doubles plus 1 in math and then set up a science experiment involving 3 containers of water. One with water and no lid, one with water and a lid, and one with dissolved sugar and no lid. What will happen? Only time and science will tell. 

We played some floor hockey and then put our work away in folders to end the day.

Friday Dec 10th

 Hi all,

Today we saw the return of a long travelled piece of work. For Remembrance Day we made Canada flags that went with a Beddington parent to Vimy Ridge in France to pay tribute to our fallen soldiers. Our flags were all planted by graves of Canadian soldiers and then returned to us today. You can even see the French soil on the bottom of the sticks. 

We also practiced our reading by read to self, reading to a partner, and listening to a story. We practiced our basic facts by doing doubles plus 1, that is things like 3+4=. If we know our doubles fact of 3+3=6 then we can know that 3+4=7 as 4 is one more than 3. We cleaned our desks. We sang with Mr. Wiens and we played floor hockey too!

Thursday Dec 9th

 Hi all,

Today we had a fantastic show and tell from Beau about his cute dog. We wrote Wow word sentences together but pushed for that 3 or 4 mark by adding details or our own sentences using our 'ea' sound words.

We talked about the rule in math where if you add zero to any number it will just stay the same and we also practiced our doubles facts eg 1+1=2, 4+4=8 etc

We played floor hockey in gym and we also made paper cups waterproof by colouring them with wax crayons.

Wednesday Dec 8th

 Hi all,

Today we practiced a lot of writing. We did our free writing this morning and later on wrote about our perfect day! We practiced making friendly numbers of 10 in math and this afternoon looked at the 3 states of matter that water has; ice, water, and steam. We also finished our book Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Reminders:

Next week is a 5 day week. They moved the PD day from Friday to earlier in the year so we are at school until 11:50 on Friday.

Library books are due back by Friday. You can get new books out in January but any book you have now must be returned for inventory.

Tuesday Dec 7th

 Hi all,

Today we practiced adding details to our sentences by thinking about adding adjectives or some who, what, when, where, why, how details! 

We had music and practiced our visualization and questioning work. 

We looked at how syrup and water are similar but different in science, played some floor hockey in gym, and then drew a fox in honour of Fantastic Mr. Fox!

Monday Dec 6th

 Hi all,

Today we got 5 new wow words all with the long e sound. They all have an 'ea' in them which usually makes the long e sound. Teacher, reading, seat, hear, least.

We did our December writing check in with a cool picture of some kids throwing snow up in the air. Very appropriate as we had just been outside for recess playing in the snow. 

We did a number of the day and basic facts check in after lunch. Then looked briefly at snow flakes to make sure that they were in fact crystals as some of the kids didn't believe me :)

We also talked about how Ukrainian culture is in Canada's prairies with pirogies, and traditional dancing. We played ball hockey in gym and heard a little more of Fantastic Mr. Fox. 

Thursday Dec 2nd

 Hi all,

Today we did our library book exchange whilst doing our quiet reading. We looked more at adjectives and described different parts of a hamburger. We looked at friendly numbers of 10 as an adding strategy. So for example, 6 and 4 are friendly numbers of 10 because 6 + 4 = 10. This afternoon we wrote our wow word sentences, watched a Bill Nye to talk about states of matter (liquid, solid, gas) and read a quick chapter of Mr. Fox.

 Hi all,

Today we practiced read to self and free writing in our journals. We had music with Mr. Wiens and then practiced a number of the day. This afternoon we did mathletics and had a fire drill. We also played floor hockey in gym and read some more of Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Library day is tomorrow so if you have any books at home make sure they come to school tomorrow.
