Tuesday May 31st

 Hi all,

Today we did a writing sample based on a picture of a playground. We started talking about bugs for our last topic in science. We made a tally chart and graph based on a picture of trucks and then talked about the kinds of questions we could ask about it. We talked about fact questions (like how many cement mixers are there?) vs opinion questions (Do you like the colours?) and which were better 'textbook' questions. After recess we made a tri Venn Diagram where we compared 3 different communities and their overlaps. We also did some races in gym for sports day practice and read some more of Jack and Annie's adventures in the prairies.

Sports day is Friday. Come dressed and ready to be outside all morning. 

Monday May 30th

 Hi all,

Today we had our class picture taken! Look for those coming home later in the year. We got a new wow word rule "-dge" which makes a j sound like 'fridge' or 'edge'. We practiced our new words, saw Mr. Wiens for music, and practiced fixing some sentences for word work, all before lunch! This afternoon we looked at how to collect data to make graphs. We also had a little look at the 3 communities we have studied and talked about which one we liked the most and want to go visit!

Reminders:

Friday is sports day so come dressed and ready to be outside all morning. Bring sunscreen/hats/sweaters/running shoes etc depending on the weather.

Friday May 27th

 Hi all,

Today we had our May Pillars of Care assembly and got to have some parents in the gym with us! That was exciting. We did some reading, partner reading, and listening to reading to help build our literacy. We cleaned out our desks. We had another go at a shape net and made pyramids this time. We played outside for gym and heard a little more of Jack and Annie's adventure on the prairies.

GRADE 2 Mr. Beechey

Care for Others: Evan - for always helping those kids who are away put their work sheets in their duotangs. He does this every time without being asked and does the job quickly and quietly! Thanks Evan.

Care for Learning: Jayden - Since Jayden has joined our classroom he has put in his best effort in not only learning our classroom routines but also all the work that we have done this term.

Care for Place: Jediah - Jediah always keeps a clean desk area and pitches in when it is time to help clean up the classroom. 

Care for Self: David - David takes care of himself by checking what the weather is outside before we go out to recess and always eating a healthy snack. 

Pillar of the Month: Quinn - Quinn shows resilience when out on the playground and in the classroom. When something is hard, he will give it another go and never gives up. 

Thursday May 26th

 Hi all,

Today we had library and reading to start off. We had show and tell and met Teddy the Polar Bear! After recess we reviewed all we had done about Meteghan and did our end of unit quiz. Lunch followed and then we practiced drawing and making 3D shapes. This is quite tough and tested some of our resiliency! After a quick recess we watched the grades 4-6 musical performance in the gym before heading outside for a quick gym. We ended our day with a story of the prairies. 

Reminders:

Tonight is the grade 4-6 performance. If you have any kids in that show it will be the same drill. Come before 6, meet in the classroom etc. 

Tomorrow morning is our pillars of care assembly. If you are the family of a winner you are invited to come to the assembly. It will be 8:30 till about 9:15.

Wednesday May 25th

 Hi all,

Today we did a lot of concert preparation! We had 2 practices in the morning and a full school assembly in the afternoon to showcase our wonderful and super cute songs. We also did a basic facts test, practiced fixing some sentences, played a word work game, looked at 3D shapes, and went out for a late gym.

Reminders:

Tonight is our Spring concert for K-grade 3 classes. Please drop your child off in the classroom after 5:30 but before 6pm and go to the gym to watch the performance. Students can bring a small stuffy to school for the performance. Parents will need to pick up children in the classroom after the performance. We are room 6 and are in the far corner of the school on the ground level. Go as far away from the gym and you should find us :)

Thursday is the grades 4-6 concert if you have older siblings.

Tuesday May 24th

 Hi all,

Hope you all had a great long weekend! Today in class we journaled about our weekends. We saw Mr. Wiens for music for one of our last practices before the concert on Wednesday. We did a number of the day before lunch. This afternoon we had mathletics to practice all those skills we have been working on this year. We also reviewed what we have learned about Meteghan and wrote a little summary page before gym.

Reminders:

Wednesday is our Spring concert for K-grade 3 classes. Please drop your child off in the classroom at 5:30 and go to the gym to watch the performance. Students can bring a small stuffy to school for the performance. They will be able to have it for the practice, assembly, and evening concert but it will be in their backpacks for the rest of the day.

Thursday May 19th

 Hi all,

This morning we heard a great show and tell from Kaliyah. Science was busy. We did our boats and buoyancy quiz, tested 2 more boats, and drew a canoe! After lunch we went on mathletics and saw the new shapes questions. After recess we did some Wow word comprehension writing, saw Ms. Sterne in the gym, and then ended our say listening to the adventures of Jack and Annie aboard the Titanic!

Reminders:

The school dance is tonight from 6-8pm. It is not compulsory but should be a lot of fun. Children must be accompanied by an adult. 

No school Friday or Monday for the May long weekend. See you Tuesday!

Wednesday May 18th

 Hi all,

Today we did a writing sample for May based on... anything you wanted! We do free write Wednesdays so it was a chance to show us how much writing you can do when you have no limits. Look for these writing samples in the end of year book that we will make next month. We watched a Bill Nye and learned a thing or two more about boats. After lunch we started talking about 3D shapes and what vertices, faces, and edges means. We also wrote our wow word sentences based on our 'wr' words, played in gym, and then listened to a little more of our Titanic story. 

Reminders:

The school dance is tomorrow from 6-8. Adults must accompany any children coming. 

No school Friday or Monday for the May long weekend.

Tuesday May 17th

 Hi all,

Today we got to test all our boats. They were all amazing and all moved by themselves and held some erasers! Good work everyone. We also learned some rules for plurals in word work. We know that we normally add an s to make a word a plural... unless it ends in a 'hissing' sound like -ss, -sh, -ch, or -x then you need to add -es as in foxes. When you have a y at the end you drop the y and add -ies like baby goes to babies... UNLESS it is a vowel y like key. Then you just add the s to make keys. English is a hard one to learn thats for sure. Don't get started on man, child, mouse, or tooth... 

We did some dance for gym and read a little more of our magic tree house book too. Somewhere in there some photographers took our pictures. What a busy day.

School dance is Thursday 6-8pm. Students must be accompanied by an adult. Come and have some spring time fun!

Monday May 16th

 Hi all,

Today we got a new wow word rule and some new words to practice. We looked at 'wr' words like write, wrong, and wriggle. The w is basically silent so it just says 'r'. After snack and recess we looked at different kinds of boats as well as the parts of a sailboat. After lunch we looked at some 2D shapes and also practiced sorting in a Venn diagram. We listened to some traditional Acadian music in social studies and heard a violin and spoon duo! We saw Ms. Sterne for gym and practiced some more dance then put away some more papers in our folders before home time. 

Reminders:

Boats are due TOMORROW!! Please bring them in so we can test them at school! 

Tomorrow is picture day so make sure you brush your hair and dress nicely for the photo!!

Friday May 13th

 Hi all,

Today we did some reading and parter reading. We made our Venn diagrams comparing the movie and book of Matilda and also wrote about our favourite parts. After a desk clean we put more papers in our math folders and then headed outside to gym for some compound games. Before hometime we learned how to make a paper boat.

Boats are due Tuesday. You can bring in your boat on Monday if you want to keep it at school. 

Thursday May 12th

 Hi all,

Today we saw some cute dinosaurs in a show and tell from Shane. We worked on our adding and subtracting in math to keep up the practice. This afternoon we watched Matilda the movie so that tomorrow we can compare it to the book. We will do a Venn diagram and also some writing about our favourite part.

Wednesday May 11

 Hi all,

Today we started off with free writing and really worked on those capital letter, periods, and finger spaces. We saw Mr. Wiens for music and then did a number of the day. After lunch we had mathletics on ipads and then did some wow word sentences with our 'ou' words. We saw the dance instructor for the last time this week and then put some papers away in our folders.

Tuesday May 10th

 Hi all,

Today we did some writing imagining what we would do if we had Matilda's powers. We looked at our own birth months to answer some calendar questions. After lunch we did our mindfulness and then went outside with the other grade 2 class to check out what sinks and what floats. We also did a couple of little experiments to see what happens when you peel an orange and what happens when you put an egg in salt water. After dancing up a storm with our guest dance teacher we put some work away in our folders.

Monday May 9th

 Hi all,

Today we got a new wow word rule and looked at the 'ou' sound which makes the 'ow' sound as in "ouch that hurt!" We practiced writing our words in our journals 5 ways and also staircase words. We talked about a little project we are doing for science where you have to build a boat (this will be in a school messenger later today) before lunch. Later we looked at how to read calendars and did a little cut and glue activity. After recess we finished off our boat designs and then met our dance instructor. He will be here tomorrow and Wednesday to show us some more cool moves! At the end of the day we put some papers in folders and read a story.

 Hi all,

Today we started off with gym and played with scoops and balls and also played some tag games. We did read to self and read to a partner after that. We cleaned out our desks and then started on a top secret project that you may or may not get to see on Sunday ;)

Thursday May 5th

 Hi all,

Today we had a cool drone show and tell from Theo to start us off. We saw Mr. Wiens for music and did the number 40 for number of the day. After lunch we worked at sorting things into Venn diagrams again. We wrote wow work sentences, went out to play compound games for gym, and put some work away in folders to end our day!

Wednesday May 4th

 Hi all,

Today we wore our hats for mental health awareness! Due to a mix up in the calendar we will also be able to wear hats to school tomorrow too! 

In class we looked at droids from Star Wars and designed our own bots! We looked at how to sort objects into Venn diagrams. We made connections to a book and looked at text to self connections and text to other books connections. After lunch we also had a cool performance from the SJAM band who played us some cool songs. We ended our day with gym.

Tuesday May 3rd

 Hi all,

Today we finished off our KW chart for boats. We wrote about what we already Know about boats, and what we Wonder about boats. We also had a little look at the Titanic and did a guided drawing about the famous ship and wrote some cool facts about it too! We had mathletics on ipads for math review. We had a catch up show and tell looking at Jediah's cool soccer medal. We finished our book Matilda and had a look at the trailer for the movie to whet our appetites for the movie next week. We also went out for a community walk in gym as the weather was so nice!

Reminders:

Picture day reminder notices came home today. The individual ones are in 2 weeks and the class picture is in 4 weeks.

Tomorrow is hats on for mental health day! Wear a hat to show support if you wish. 

Monday May 2nd

 Hi all,

Happy Eid to all those celebrating today!!

In class today we got a new wow word rule, the 'ow' words like cow, towel, and so on. We practiced writing out our words 5 ways and doing staircase words. We saw Mr. Wiens for music and did our April weather graphs. After lunch we practiced estimating using referents but this time with bigger numbers. We talked about mental health a little as this week is Mental health week. We talked about ways you can try to change your mood when you're feeling a little bit grumpy. After an outside gym we got very close to the end of Matilda but did not quite finish it.
