Pillars of Care winners

 Who has two thumbs and forgot to post the pillars of care winners? This guy... sorry team. Here are the January winners.

Care for Others: Kaliyah - is such a kind and helpful person and is always showing care for others in everything she does.

Care for Learning: Eliaz - has been putting in a great effort during our writing activities, making sure he does his best and is improving his writing skills every day.

Care for Place: David - has been trying to keep his desk area clean and to make sure he takes all his belongings out of the coat room at the end of the day.

Care for Self: Ezri - has shown care for self by dressing warmly for the weather, wearing her mask properly, and remembering to sanitize her hands.

Pillar of the Month: Adalynn - We learned that part of wisdom means being curious and Adi is a curious cat. I love when I hear “Mr. Beechey, I have a question…” as it is another opportunity to learn something new.

Friday Jan 28th

 Hi all,

Today we started off our day a little differently by having gym right away. Then we came back to class and had our pillars of care assembly. We did a calendar and then snack with a new book series called Cat Ninja. We did read to self and partner reading. We went over our Friday Favourites and also did some math word problems.

Report cards are released next week. You will not be sent home a paper copy but instead have to log on to mycbe.ca to view your child's report card. 

Thursday Jan 27th

 Hi all,

Today we had a cool Mario themed show and tell. We saw Mr. Wiens for music and had our liquids quiz in science. We went on ipads for mathletics and also learned what natural resources you can find in Iqaluit.

Tomorrow morning we have a schedule change and will have gym right away at 8am. If you are late you will find us in the gym, not the classroom. This is just for tomorrow. 

Wednesday Jan 26th

 Hi all,

Today we did some free writing in the morning with the added challenge to see if you could add some rhyming words in! We played some jeopardy to review our science concepts for the quiz tomorrow. We wrote wow word sentences and also started talking about word problems in math. We skipped in gym with Ms. Sterne and then had a special guest for the last half hour of the day to read us some BFG.

Tomorrow is library day so if your library book is at home make sure it comes back tomorrow so you can exchange it!!

Tuesday Jan 25th

 Hi all,

Today we talked about how to rhyme words by looking at the last sound in a word. It can usually help with spelling because they usually end with the same letters too! We did a little experiment with some materials and tested how absorbent they were. We also looked at how expensive food is in Iqaluit compared to a bigger city closer to the supply chain. We added and subtracted some bigger numbers as we start to do some real grade 2 math. We ended our day with jump ropes and then hearing about the adventures of the BFG.

Monday Jan 24th

 Hi all,

Today we heard another show and tell as we catch up our friends who have missed their days. We had music and heard a musical story about wisdom. We did number of the day and also started learning how to add and subtract bigger numbers. We learned that you need to make sure your 10s and 1s places are lined up or you will get a different answer! We practiced our 5 new Wow words - five, like, cried, time, quiet - which all have an 'ie' or 'i_e' sound in them. The bossy e makes the i say its name. We ended our day with some skip rope and BFG.

Thursday Jan 20th

 Hi all,

Today we went to the library for our book exchange. We had a show and tell where we got to meet Pikachu. We had some liquid races and learned what the word viscosity means. Ask me how I can make a thick, viscous liquid go faster! This afternoon we played a couple of math games and took a look at what landforms are up in Iqaluit.

Wednesday Jan 19th

 Hi all,

Today we did some free choice writing. We were focussing on keeping our writing neat and tidy by using the lines to write our letters in the right spaces. We looked at the provincial symbols (well territorial symbols) of Nunavut. Fun fact - there is no official tree symbol! Know why? There are no trees in Nunavut. We used the counting back strategy to do some simple grade 2 subtraction. We also wrote wow word sentences, practiced balancing in gym, and heard some more of the BFG!

Tuesday Jan 18

 Hi all,

Today we did our January writing sample based on a picture prompt of some kids celebrating New Year's Eve. We had music with Mr. Wiens and got to play on the xylophones, finally putting those kids alphabet charts to good use (how else do we all know the word xylophone?). We had ipads for mathletics and also luckily for us for our indoor recess. We ended our day practicing rolls and balances in the gym before reading some BFG. We also did a journal entry about the grossest food we could imagine! This was based on hearing about the dreaded snozzcumbers from the BFG! After talking about gross food for so long we had to watch a yummy video. If you want to make yummy snozzcumbers then check out this video. If you make them, let me know how they turn out!

Monday Jan 17th

 Hi all,

Today we heard another great show and tell from Ari. We learned what happens to water once it evaporates. We talked about how to add and subtract with zero. This afternoon we got 5 new wow words that all end with a long 'ee' sound but actually use the letter 'Y' - city, happy, money, key, body. We also did some cool movement lines in gym and heard a little more of the BFG.

Important:

Rapid test kits and masks came home today. Please go over the sheet provided for more information.

There is a little how to video about how to make masks fit kids a bit better if you are struggling with that! 

Thursday Jan 13

 Hi all,

Today we had a library book exchange for the first time in a while. These books from our school library can come home, but if they do remember to bring them back for next Thursday so you can swap it for a new book. We talked about how you can conserve water in your own home so be prepared for some reminders for shorter showers and doing less laundry :) We talked about how addition and subtraction are related and did some fact family work in math. After recess we did a little gymnastics presentation and then watched how much faster it is to dry things using wind and heat!

Wednesday Jan 12

 Hi all,

Today we did some free writing after our reading. We talked about how we need to have finger spaces and make sure our letters are on the right spot on the lines. We had music with Mr. Wiens and then played the big word game, where you try and unscramble the big word and also make smaller words out of its letters. This afternoon we did mathletics on the ipads and then talked about the importance of water to living things. We practiced our gymnastics moves and then read some more of the BFG.

Tuesday Jan 11

 Hi all,

Today we wrote about our winter breaks for our writing sample books. We took a look at Iqaluit, our new community that we are studying, and looked at what life is like up north. We got back into practice with numbers with a number of the day sheet and a basic facts quiz. We also put ourselves in Sophie's shoes as she was captured by the BFG and thought about how she must be feeling as she was kidnapped! We did some more gymnastics with Ms. Sterne and also read another little bit of the BFG.

Monday January 10th

 Hi all,

Welcome back! Hope you all had a great extended break! We got right back into our work day with some quiet reading. We did a planning sheet so we can write about our winter break tomorrow. We made some new year resolutions. One for home and one for school. We drew our December weather graphs, a pictograph and a bar graph, based off the data we collected before the break. This afternoon we took another look at our evaporation experiment. All the water from the open containers had disappeared but the closed containers still had their water! Weird... We started gymnastics today by working on a safe landing and did some different movements around the gym. We skipped, galloped, and crab walked. We ended our day with a new read aloud, The BFG! Seriously has one of the best beginnings of any book ever!
