Iqaluit Poem (please practice at home as much as you can!)

Monday Feb 28th

 Hi all,

Today we started off practicing our new poem! We wrote a poem about Iqaluit together last week. We are going to learn it so that we can make a video of us reading our poem as a class for a video put together by Mr. Hebert to celebrate our school's literacy. I sent home green forms for my 4 kids who do not have media release. If you wish your child to be in the video I need these forms signed and returned by next week. It is a media release for the whole school year so please read carefully before you sign if you are unsure of what it all means. If I do not have media release then your child will read the poem in the background but will not appear on camera.

We got 5 new wow words with the 'ow' rule. This makes a long o sound in words like yellow, throw, own, know, snow.

We practiced our double digit addition with regrouping. A hard skill when you're learning the first time! Practice makes perfect though :)

We had a quiz about Iqaluit, saw Ms. Sterne in gym and read some more BFG to end our day!

Reminders:

Sign up for parent teacher conferences on mycbe so we can discuss your child's progress! They are March 10th and 11th

Friday Feb 25th

 Hi all,

Happy 100th Day! We made cool hats to celebrate and wrote out all 100 numbers to show just how many days we have enjoyed in grade 2 so far! Only 76 days to go till you're in grade 3!!

We had a pillars of care assembly (see below for winners), a surprise fire drill, and did a sharing circle!

Have a great weekend and enjoy the slightly warmer weather!

And the winners are...

Care for Others: Jason - has shown care for others by working really hard at keeping to himself during class time this month and cutting down his distractions. This has really helped everyone around him become more successful and focus on their own jobs.

Care for Learning: Evan - has been focussed on his work all month, even when friends around him are getting distracted, his head is down and he is busy with the job at hand.

Care for Place: Carter - who is always asking if we can play our garbage clean up game to help make sure the classroom is clean and tidy.

Care for Self: Alison - is always making sure to look after number 1. From her healthy snacks, safe play at recess, to staying home when she feels unwell, she is always showing care for self.

Pillar of the Month: April - is full of pearls of wisdom about how to show love. During our Black History Month discussions and during our Golden Rule conversation in the beginning of the year, she has always reminded us to live our lives with respect and love.

Tuesday Feb 8th

 Hi all,

Today we worked on predicting when we read. Using clues in the book to figure out what happens next. We also talked about roles in families and what the roles of a traditional Inuit family are. We learned what regrouping means and practiced by circling groups of 10 blocks. We talked about what love is and how we show and receive love. Ms. Sterne took us for gym and then we put some papers in our folders.

A reading tracker sheet came home today. We are taking part in "Reading, give it a shot" again this year where you read at home to earn animal trading cards and if we as a school get the most minutes we will get a (virtual) visit from the Calgary Flames! For every 30 minutes you read, you get a card. If you collect all 24, there are bonus cards too. Track all your reading, every minute counts. Even if you read 6 minutes a night, you will get a card every week!
